Photo Narrative
In our previous lesson, we watched a film that was created by using many photos and these photos made sequences/narration in the movie. It was different than the kind we were used to it. We had a chance to observe and understand every details in photos and in our mind, we tried to combine the previous photos and next photos in order to understand whole story. However, movie has movement in it. It always continues and sometimes people cannot realise many details while they are watching. By using photography in storytelling, the photos are going one by one and so, it is more good way to convey your ideas to audiences.
When our next assignment came up, I searched something interesting about photography in storytelling on internet then, one of the photographer’s who names is Duane Michals photographs came to me very interesting. In his photographs, there are most of variations while he was trying to approach his idea in photos. Sometimes he used surrealist approach in order to survey a message or sometimes his photographs so clear to understand because he just took photos somewhere and wrote notes what the photos were about. However, I looked most of his art and the most I like is in his photographs that are under the concept of photo sequences. For example, we first see big picture but scene by scene actually we look at picture that hangs on the wall. I liked the idea of how he made a sequence.
In my further searching, I also like conveying the idea of time passing in photo narrative technic. It makes more emotional approach in photo narrative. For instance, in a basic way, if we see scene by scene faded flowers, it may affect emotionally to people and every people may imagine different way to understand what these flowers’ meanings.
As a result, I looked many examples about photo narrative and I would like to create narration that is about how people cannot see their around if they just look in one direction. It may contains both emotion and Duane Michals idea in sequence.
